It features 21 luxury tents; 12 of them will be mirror image tents linked together to create a spectacular two bedroom unit that can accommodate two couples or a couple and four children.

The most exciting part of the camp are the private tents; set high on the hill and with spectacular views of the Arenal Volcano. Each spacious tent was built on stilts to leave a minimal footprint. The experience is secluded and romantic for couples, or fun and educational for the whole family. The idea for tents was originally inspired by African safari camps but conceived in the tropical Costa Rican rainforest, the tents are a mix of sustainable luxury with a “Pura Vida” vibe. All luxury air-conditioned tents feature signature plunge pools with water fed from the volcano, large soaking indoor tubs, and outdoor showers with views of the star. This resort is truly glamping at it’s finest.

Resort Review: Tamarindo Diria

Tamarindo Diria Hotel is a luxurious Four Star Hotel located right on the beach of the vibrant surf town of Tamarindo. I spent 4 nights here and can testify that The Diria truly embodies the history and culture of Costa Rica.

Sunset Oceanfront Room View

The resort is broken into four areas; the Sunset Rooms located beachside, the Tropicana Rooms located across the street and closest to the resort’s two main pools, the multi bedroom condos that rise above the Tropicana section, and the neighboring boutique sister property that is adult’s only. Special note, the Diria is great for groups and even has a private group lounge for checkin

Tropical Quiet Pool

That being said, the majority of the Diria’s rooms have incredible ocean and sunset views with direct frontage and access to Tamarindo Beach. Night lights decorating the gardens and walkways will further enhance the beauty of local flora and fauna creating an atmosphere of tranquility and peace. The main beachfront restaurant is something out of a movie scene and features a giant Matapalo tree adorned with stained glass lamps that light up at sunset.

Diria Beachfront Restaurant at Dusk

The Diria is a testament to hospitality in Costa Rica and is one of its oldest and most iconic resorts with over 35 years of experience, establishing itself as one of the most successful hotel operations in Tamarindo.

Resort Grounds

Tamarindo is 1 hour from Liberia International Airport; 5 hours from Juan Santamaria International Airport by land and 45 minutes by air.

Fact Sheet:

  • 5 Onsite Dining Options

  • Resident Howler Monkeys (not really an inclusion but they live in the trees above the Kids Pool)
Resident Howler Monkeys

Notes on the Diria’s Commercial Zone:

The commercial shopping center was specifically designed by the Diria Group for the enjoyment of their hotel guests. Each shop is unique and offers a variety of options that embody the culture of Costa Rica. Located just outside the lobby, this shopping plaza features a variety of clothing shops, international restaurants and cafes, a jewelry boutique, art galleries, a jazz casino, local handicrafts, a dive and surf center, a pharmacy, a spa and a bank – all for the convenience of hotel guests.

Bamboo Sushi Club

Notes on Tamarindo:

The town of Tamarindo is a quite colorful surfer’s paradise with plenty of local ‘Tico’ flavor. A multi-cultural community, Tamarindo boasts several bakeries, coffee shops, an outdoor vegetable market, and more than 40 restaurants and bars. Whether you like to eat vegetarian, ‘Tipico’ Costa Rican, Italian or seafood, you’ll find amazing eats all throughout Tamarindo.

Additional offerings include art galleries, a pottery stores and countless surf shops/boutiques. It is an ideal place for honeymoons and weddings, couples and families looking for a more laid-back destination, and wonderfully suited to eco-adventures. Tamarindo offers first class sport fishing (see Mahi photos below), sailing, surfing, golfing, ATV tours, turtle watching, diving, horseback riding, canopy tours and jungle boat rides.

Horseback Riding on Tamarindo Beach

Notes on the Beaches:

The beach is a two-mile stretch of white sand and warm Pacific blue water that is absolutely breathtaking; that being said, it is also a public beach. If you are unfamiliar with public beaches in countries outside of the US; this should read ‘there will be beach venders EVERYWHERE’. I did not experience anyone that was super pushy or made me feel uncomfortable, but just be aware that Tamarindo does not have any private beaches.

In addition to beaches, Tamarindo is surrounded by National Parks to its north and south, and mountains with breathtaking views to its east. Nature is abundant, leatherback turtles lay their eggs in the northern part of the bay. In some restaurants giant iguanas will come up to your table expecting table scraps.

Walter’s Tamarindo – they cooked our Mahi Mahi onsite

4 Star Resort Category Notes:

I want to highlight, this is a four star resort and not the same as the 5 star resorts I typically sell and visit. For my clients who are used to 5 stars, the Diria might not be for you. That being said, there is absolutely nothing wrong with this resort and I LOVED my stay here and would absolutely stay again. Expectations are everything and this is in fact a resort review, so here are some things you might find different from the 5 star luxury experience:

  • The hot water didn’t reach blazing hot temperatures in our room and some days it was pretty chilly. This is something that is more common in other countries and was manageable for us but worth mentioning.
  • There is not 24 hour room service available but dining options are open late night, you just have to trek downstairs and pick it up yourself.
  • Breakfast does not include a waiter/waitress table side; you have staff throughout the breakfast restaurant but no one will be visiting your table so if you need something you’ll have to jump up and grab it.
  • There are not ‘towel boys’ around the pools taking orders and handing out towels for guests. Again, if you want either you’ll have to walk to the bar/towel desk to grab it yourself
  • This resort is owned by a German family, most rooms feature double beds instead of 1 king bed (not really 4 vs 5 but something to note)

Perfect for honeymoons or anniversaries, this extremely personalized service is a unique opportunity to experience dinner in a glorious natural setting. The new private bungalows located in the botanical gardens, nestled on the edge of the rainforest, with streams of hot springs running on either side and open on three sides to take in the views of the verdant gardens and forest, provide a unique ambience. Your dinner will be served at a magnificently set table for two with private chef and waiter, among lighted torches, making an unforgettable romantic moment

Los Tucanes Restaurant

Notes on the Plant a Tree Initiative:

Tabacon has developed various programs and sustainable tourism practices to take care of the environment; one of their most popular is the Plant a Tree Initiative.

All guests staying at the resort are invited to plant one almond tree per guest on the property during their stay with supervision of the garden staff. The saplings are tagged and registered to guests so that they can check on their progress when they return for their next vacation. The entire activity takes about 20-30 minutes and is oh so rewarding!

Tabacon’s Plant a Tree Initiative

Through this initiative, Tabacon reported that they have planted over 3,000 trees so far! Famous celebrities (check their website for more info) have since stayed at the property so that they can plant trees in Costa Rica’s secondary rainforest and leave their mark on the regeneration of these beautiful forests! Of course we had to plant our trees as well and plan to visit them in a few years to see their growth

What to Pack for My All Inclusive Vacay

When it comes to packing for an all-inclusive vacation, I’d like to think I’ve got it completely covered

Over the years of traveling to different countries, climates, and resorts I’ve slowly learned which items have earned a place in my suitcase and which items are better left at home

Packing for your long over due all-inclusive vacation is exciting and can help reduce stress leading up to a trip by getting your excited prior to boarding your plane.

However, more times than not, my clients overestimate what they really need to bring along, or forget some of the more important, unexpected extras that can end up costing them big time when resorts inflate the price tag.

Below you’ll find my suggestions on the must have items as well as a few to forgo AND a printable packing list you can download to track your progress

*this post contains affiliate links where I earn compensation when you click and purchase through the links at absolutely no extra cost to you.

Atelier – Playa Mujeres

What to pack in your carry on

  • Passport
  • Required Documents (Travel Docs, COVID Docs, Vaccination Card, Health Applications, Insurance Info – I send detailed information out on this about 15 days prior to my clients departure date)
  • Cash for tipping – I recommend small bills
  • Credit/Debit Card
  • Reusable water bottle – Avana is my all time favorite
  • Any valuables – I typically recommend keeping these out of checked luggage
  • Travel Pillow or TikTok famous Neck Support Scarf
  • Power bank
  • Travel adapter (depending on where you’re going! If you’re coming from Canada or USA, you do not need one for Mexico.)
  • Headphones, either noise cancelling (great for flights) or bluetooth ear buds for the pool or beach
  • Travel jewelry case (this is a lifesaver ladies)
  • Swimsuit wet bag for the trip home (example below)

  • Medication
  • Books (or Kindle) – I like turning pages but the Kindle Paperwhite has an anti-glare screen and barely takes up any space in the suitcase
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Charging cables
  • Masks (these are some of the best travel masks I’ve found)

REMEMBER any liquids packed in you carry on bag must not be more than 100 ml each. If you want to make sure everything is the correct allowance; I recommend grabbing a travel bottle set.

TA ProTip: if you plan on checking a suitcase, pack enough clothing in your carry-on. This way it’s easy to change once you arrive at the resort if your room isn’t ready. Additionally, in the event your suitcase is delayed, at least you’ll have a fresh change of clothes (and your swimsuit!)

My secret to carry-on travel? Packing cubes! They are amazing and it’s so incredible how much more you can fit into your suitcase when using these! I never travel without them! The below starter set has 7 pieces that can be used for carry on and checked luggage.

What to pack in your checked luggage

  • Shorts
  • Tank tops/t-shirts
  • Day dresses
  • Dressy sandals for evening
  • Evening wear – most resorts have a dress code for evenings; if you are unsure I would consult your resorts website. This especially applies to men – usually no open-toed shoes, and men must wear long pants and collared shirts. As a rule of thumb, I bring 4 dresses for a 7 night stay, and two pairs of shoes that go with either outfit.
  • Active wear – if you plan on doing any day trips, or working out.
  • A light sweater – I tend to wear this on the plane
  • Undergarments (including socks)
  • For women – sticky bras or petals
  • Mini Steamer – is it extra? Yes. Is it worth it? Also, yes.
  • Sun hat
  • Flip Flops/Sandals
  • Cover-up
  • Swimsuits
  • Sunglasses – I usually bring two in case one pair ends up in the ocean
  • Beach bag – this one is easily packable

  • Sunscreen – much cheaper to buy ahead of time than at the resort
  • Reef safe sunscreen – if you’re planning on snorkeling; its a good idea to pack this instead to protect the delicate ecosystems. If you don’t bring your own then you may be required to purchase some on a tour, which can be expensive
  • Lip sunscreen
  • Tumbler/Insulted Cup – not really a necessity, but it is eco-conscious and keeps your drinks from melting by the pool
  • Aloe vera
  • Insect repellant – I cannot stress this enough
  • Hair ties and bobby pins
  • Deodorant
  • Feminine hygiene products & contraceptives
  • Razor and shaving cream
  • Makeup remover
  • Makeup
  • Tide stick
  • Toothbrush, floss, and toothpaste
  • Hair brush and styling tools

What NOT to pack

  • Towels – you’ll even be given a towel card or will have free access to towels throughout the resort for the beach and pool
  • Pillows – some resorts, even have their own pillow menus
  • A hair dryer – they are in the room
  • Shampoo, lotion, body wash, etc. – resorts will provide this unless you want your specific brands

Downloadable Packing List

Of course, this is not an all encompassing list and every trip is unique. Use your best judgment with your packing list. No matter what, don’t stress too much – this is your vacay after all. Happy traveling everyone!
